Dunhuang overview

If you are visiting China with the intention of seeing something other than the things in postcards and McDonald's adverts, then Dunhuang is a great place to stop. Located on the trail of the ancient Silk Road, Dunhuang was once a major stop on the road from India to Tibet to Mongolia. Dunhuang also represents one of the more unique climates in China, as it is dry and looks a bit more like the deserts from Star Wars than the sub-tropical environment found in the south. Many people come for the Mogao Caves, which contain a number of both Buddhist and Christian relics, which illustrate just how diverse the crowd on the Silk Road really was. Dunhuang is one of the cities in China that will remind you of why you wanted to come to this country in the first place.
