Hangzhou overview

Hangzhou Travel Guide
Hangzhou is the southernmost point of the Grand Canal, floating blissfully in the Yangtze Delta. Arguably the best tourist city for seeing the real China, the city’s magnificent West Lake has drawn travellers since the Tang Dynasty in 609. Marco Polo dubbed Hangzhou the finest city in the world, suggesting this was truly paradise found, while the green hills surrounding the iconic Lake District are scattered with historic temples, crumbling ruins and blissful quiet. An easy day-trip from Shanghai, the first stop on any itinerary should be a cruise on the lake. Avoid the eastern banks which are being slowly ruined by over-zealous development. Hangzhou also features numerous quaint museums and pagodas, while the local cuisine is world-famous, notably the Dongpo Pork and Beggars Chicken. The Tea Museum and National Silk Museum also offer rare insights into traditional industries not seen on many package tours.
