Hong Kong overview

The former British colony of Hong Kong remains an overwhelming sensory assault on first impression. The crammed, steamy sidewalks teeming with bubbling food stalls and neon lighting, not to mention chain-smoking stone-faced locals. Despite the grand scale of its iconic skyline, which is a skyscraper-spotters dream, there are pockets of tranquillity in this well-organised city. The climate can be muggy, or to be more honest downright unpleasant, but the sweeping views of the legendary harbour provide numerous spots for noodle soup or an alfresco beer. There are also romantic beaches, glorious mountain vistas and deserted islands if you can escape the frenzy of downtown. Hong Kong is a delight for those willing to step outside of their comfort zone, with the local food always entertaining. Tai Chi at dawn is the best time to experience the city before the daily chaos ensues.
