Urumqi overview

Situated in what feels like the middle of nowhere, just a several hundred kilometres from the Mongolian and Kazak border is the city of Urumqi. Not exactly famous for tourism, the city mostly caters for internal business travellers; however there are a few sites to see for the adventurous traveller who intends to see a new side of China, which actually feels like a mix between Kazakhstan and China. Urumqi features some picturesque temples as well as museums and even an Islamic bazaar, which can be a very lively place in the summer months. Most hotels are located in the CBD of Urumqi with many options catering for all budgets. Urumqi is served by a number of Chinese airlines which fly direct from most major cities, as well as international flights from Kazakhstan and Russia.
